Inspirational Women: Sister Gerardine Ryan - Champion of Disability Welfare

Sister Gerardine Ryan, originally from County Limerick, Ireland, is a member of the Missionary Sisters of St Columban, and has devoted over four decades to serving the underprivileged of Mokpo, South Korea. Arriving in the country in the mid 1970s, she began her mission by volunteering at an orphanage, where she first encountered individuals with disabilities—a pivotal experience that shaped her lifelong commitment to this community.  

Come and meet this inspirational woman, who has made Korea her home, and whose many initiatives continue to have a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and families. Sister’s achievements serve as a blueprint for disability welfare and social integration in a country which, in days past, had an entirely different attitude towards those with differences, preferring instead to hide them away. Sister’s personal story traces evolving social attitudes and her enduring fight against prejudice.
